The statement made by Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena yesterday that Gen. Sarath Fonseka was arrested due to a statement he made to the BBC ‘Sandehaya’ is a blatant lie says renowned journalist of BBC ‘Sandeshaya’ Elmo Fernando.

Mr. Elmo Fernando made this clarification answering a question posed by a journalist at a press conference convened by Ms. Anoma Fonseka today.

He pointed out that the interview Gen. Fonseka had with BBC ‘Sandeshaya’ was broadcast at 10.00 p.m. on the day Gen. Fonseka was arrested. However, the General was arrested at 9.15 p.m. Hence, stating that Gen. Fonseka was arrested basing on the interview he did with BBC ‘Sandeshaya’ is a blatant lie stated Mr. Elmo Fernando.
