Laos: Fashion Show Brings Laos and India Closer

15 June  2010

Traditional Lao items of clothing adapted to suit modern trends were among the colourful items that caught the attention of audience members at the 2010 Lao and Indian Fashion Show in Vientiane on Saturday night.

The show, staged at the Don Chan Palace hotel, helped to boost cultural links between the two nations by showcasing the lifestyles and customary clothing of Laos and India.

More than 100 models strutted their stuff on the catwalk, wearing traditional Lao skirts (sinh), silk blouses, and the Indian sari.

The fashion items from India were designed by well-known designers from Malaysia and India, with a focus on work attire and clothing for social occasions.

The HSMM Group of India supported the charity event in collaboration with the New Wave Hair Studio of Laos.

HSMM Group Managing Director, Mr Habib Mohammed Chowdhury, said fashion provides insight into the culture and lifestyle of a country.

He said the show gave Lao people a glimpse into the way of life in India.

“This amazing multicultural show has brought together the rich cultures of India and Laos.”

Mr Chowdhury said the show was just a small part of the two countries’ cultural exchanges, but the real treasure of Laos is its friendly, welcoming and charming people.

All money raised at the show will go to supporting the Luang Prabang Orphans Centre, Suan Luang Tribal School in Xieng Ngeun village, and various charitable projects operated by the Women’s International Group, including helping destitute patients and poor students.
