Indonesia: Five Questioned Over 'Tempo' Arson Attack

6 July 2010

Central Jakarta Police have questioned five witnesses over an arson attack on Tempo magazine office early Tuesday.

“We are still investigating the motive behind the molotov cocktail attack,” Central Jakarta Police chief  Sr. Comr. Hamidin told Antara on Tuesday.

Hamidin also said that the police had investigated the crime scene and found three cocktail bombs, one failed to explode.

He said that the police alleged there were two people involved in hurling the bombs while riding a motorcycle.

The cocktail bombs were thrown at the Tempo magazine office on Jl. Proklamasi, Menteng, Central Jakarta, at around 2:40 a.m. on Tuesday. There was no injuries in the incident.

The incident follows Tempo's last week’s edition that ran a cover story on the suspicious bank accounts of several high-ranking officers, a controversial issue that has been in the media spotlight since 2005.

Meanwhile, the Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Djoko Suyanto has condemned the arson attack on the office of prominent news magazine Tempo.

“The authorities have to look for the perpetrators and punish them according to law,” he told Antara news agency on Tuesday.
